Chapter 2: Ginger Ale's

24 December 2007 08:28
CBI Headquarter

“Shannon?” Duvalier called outside her office.
“Yeah!” she answered. Duvalier stuck his head inside the open door and found that Shannon was nowhere to be seen.
“Uh, where are you exactly?”
Shannon lowered herself down from the ceiling quickly to surprise Duvalier.
“The fuck are you doing?” he asked her.
“My old security cameras broke down so I decided to change them.”
“And why didn’t you get maintenance to do it for you?”
“That’s because I don’t like it when people I don’t know waltz into my office. Now what is it that you wanted?”
“We have a suspect for the Camerella case. Victor Crumb age 42 works at a pharmaceutical.”
“What’s his relation with the victim?”
“Camerella was working for Crumb at the pharmaceutical. Camerella had recently lost the company thousands of dollars in pharmaceutical drugs.”
“How did he manage that?”
“Lets go ask Crumb,” Duvalier said.
“Alright I want you to call Abner and tell him to get here pronto. I want his analysis on this Crumb guy.”

CBI Interrogation Room

“Mr. Crumb what is your relation to Mr. Cole Camerella?” Shannon inquired.
“Camerella? The chump used t’ work fer me back at the pharmaceutical. Till the SOB lost us ten grand ‘n drugs.”
“Would you care to explain?”
“There was a shipment goin’ out one day but the idiot sent ‘em out t’ the wrong store.”
“Where did he send them?”
“Dunno? That’s why I said he lost us ten grand.”
“He literally lost the drugs.”
“It’s what I’m sayin’!”
“Mr. Crumb, can you tell me where you were you yesterday from two to three in the morning?” Shannon asked.
“I was out drinkin’ late with some friends.” Mr. Crumb froze. “Why are you askin’ that?”
“Mr. Crumb I’m not going to mince words with you. We have reason to believe that yesterday morning you killed Cole Camerella as Coroner.”
“K- killed? I didn’ kill anyone!”
“Then why did you say, “The chump used to work…” she asked.
“Cause I fired the idiot just yesterday.”
“Yes, fired. Is that another word for “killed” Mr. Crumb?”
“Go ahead and ask my buddy Heath Cliff! I was out drinkin’ with him at Ale’s I swear to god!”
Shannon simply glared at him but rose from her seat and began to leave.
“W- where are ya goin’?” Victor Crumb asked.
“Out to verify your alibi.” Shannon made a motion to the one-way mirror to follow her. As she exited the interrogation room, Abner exited the watch room and joined her.
“What do you think?” Shannon asked.
“Not going to say anything yet. He could be our guy then again, me might not.”
“Alright then, I’m going to go ahead and verify his alibi. You coming?”
“Eh sure why not?” Abner grinned, “I could use a drink.”

Ginger Ale’s Pub

“Ah, perhaps you should stay outside on this one,” Abner suggested to Shannon.
“Why?” Shannon looked surprised.
“Well,” Abner’s arms were outstretched and looked awkwardly at Shannon. “You stick out.”
“How so?”
“Well I mean… you look… you look to much like police.”
“I am police.”
“Yeah but not even sober people like talking to police,” Abner said.
Shannon sighed. “You have ten minutes.”
“I only need five.”
Abner walked into the pub alone and began looking around for Heath Cliff. Shannon had shown him earlier a picture of Heath. Heath Cliff was a rather muscular, tall and is physically strong. Even when seemingly drunk, he had a cool demeanor. Most of his hair was put in a ponytail with a single clump of it falling down his face.
Abner found Heath drinking shots at the pub’s smallest bar all alone. Abner approached the bar and called out, “Bartender, bourbon on the rocks,” pulling out a five dollar bill. The bartender quickly poured Abner his drink and shoved it across the table. Abner took a little drink and sighed softly.
“You like bourbon whiskey?” Abner asked Heath.
“I certainly like the taste,” Heath took another drink of the bourbon. “Another.”
“How long have you been here?” Abner asked.
“I actually got here five minutes ago. You?”
“Ah I’m new to town. I just got here looking for a nice drink. This a good place?”
“Well I come here often so I like it,” Heath drank.
“How often do you come here?”
“You ask a lot of questions,” Heath looked at Abner with eyebrows raised.
Abner grinned. “I take my alcohol very seriously.”
“Then you’re gonna like it here. Bartender, start a tab will ya. What’s your name?”
“Holmes, Abner Holmes.”
“Heath Cliff. Why don’t you sit down?”
Abner sat down next to Heath and the two began to drink away.
“Five minutes huh?” Shannon asked angrily with her arms crossed.
“Oh hey, Shannon. This is my wife Shannon and this is…”
“Heath Cliff, an old anesthesiologist.,” Heath finished the introduction. “How do you do?” Heath shook hands with Shannon.
“I’m doing well ha ha. Sweetheart, I thought you said you would only be in for a quick drink?” Shannon asked irritated.
“Well I was, but Heath here was telling me all about this place. Now how often did you say you come here?” Abner asked.
“Eh, I usually come here once a week but I’ve been coming here everyday lately.”
“So you’ve been here yesterday too?” Abner asked.
“Yup, my damn wife,” he took a drink.
“Did she kick you out?” Abner asked.
“No, I just don’t want to be near her for a little while.”
“Financial problems again?” Abner asked.
“Its good to see you again Abner. But really, you’re new in town. Come up with a better story then that,” Heath chuckled.
“What can I say? I was never much into theatrics. Anyway, where were you yesterday around two o’clock in the morning?” Abner asked.
“Here.”
“Where you with anyone?” Shannon asked.
“Is she a cop?” Heath asked Abner.
“Yeah so you better answer her question.”
“I was with Victor Crumb from midnight till about four when he left home.”
Shannon leaned in towards Abner. “It is entirely possible that our killer wrote a false time on the wall and killed Camerella at a later time.”
“We’ll have to ask Raph about the time of death then.”
“Hey man what happened?” Heath asked.
“Nothing just police work,” Abner said. He slowly dragged Shannon away and out of the pub. “See you later Heath! It might be sooner than you think.”
“Seriously? Your wife?”
“Hey how else was I supposed to explain your unannounced entrance?”
“The two of you already know each other.”
“You wouldn’t be okay with playing pretend wife with me while undercover?”
“You weren’t undercover? You announced to him that you were with police.”
“I said that you were police, big diff,” Abner chuckled.
“What ever. Lets head to the lab.”

CBI Forensics Lab

“I checked to see if Cole’s death was really at 2:37 in the morning,” Raph announced. “Once again the message does not lie. Cole died at anytime from one to three in the morning.”
“There’s no way that Crumb could be our killer than,” Shannon said disheartened.
“That would appear to be the case,” Abner said with no change in emotion.
“I guess the only thing we can do for now is question Mr. Crumb for some leads. Raph I want you to get me a more precise time frame to work with. Come on Abner.”
Abner and Shannon left for the interrogation room.
